Our Story
Izama Creations is a story of family, resilience, loss, and the courage to begin again.
Our story began in Puerto Rico in 2017, in the aftermath of Hurricane María.
At the time, I was a single mother raising my two children, Izahir and Amanda, while trying to navigate one of the most difficult periods our island had experienced. Hurricane María changed life for so many Puerto Rican families. There was uncertainty everywhere, and like many others, I was trying to figure out how to rebuild, provide for my children, and keep moving forward.
In the middle of that uncertainty, I began creating.
I discovered that something as simple as discarded paper could be transformed by hand into something completely different — colorful beads, jewelry, art, and pieces filled with personality. What started as creativity during a difficult season slowly became something much more meaningful.
And that is how Izama Creations was born.
The name Izama is especially close to my heart because it comes from the names of my children: Izahir and Amanda. They were my reason to keep pushing forward during some of the hardest moments of my life, so it only felt right that the business I was building carried a piece of them in its name.
But there was another deeply personal part of Izama's story.
During this chapter of our lives, my sister was battling cancer.
Watching someone I loved so deeply fight such a difficult battle changed the way I looked at life, strength, time, and purpose. Creating became more than making jewelry. It became an emotional outlet — a place where I could take worry, fear, hope, love, and everything I was carrying and turn it into something beautiful.
There was something symbolic about transforming paper that might otherwise have been discarded into wearable art. It reminded me that something's circumstances do not have to determine its beauty or its value. With patience, imagination, and care, it could be transformed.
That idea became part of the soul of Izama.
Over time, Izama Creations grew beyond something I was simply making at home. My handmade work allowed me to share my creativity, my Puerto Rican roots, and the story behind the pieces with others. Every bead was rolled by hand. Every design was different. And every creation carried a little piece of the journey that brought me there.
Then the world changed again.
When COVID-19 arrived, families everywhere entered another season of uncertainty. For me, it came while I was already carrying the emotional weight of my sister's illness, motherhood, and everything life had brought during the years since Hurricane María.
And in 2020, my sister passed away after her battle with cancer.
Losing her changed me.
Izama had been created during a chapter so deeply connected to my family, my sister, and everything we had experienced together that continuing to create no longer felt the same. I needed time to grieve. I needed time to heal.
So I stepped away from Izama Creations.
For several years, the business remained quiet — but the part of me that loved creating never completely disappeared.
And now, Izama is beginning again.
This new chapter honors where we started while allowing the brand to grow into something new. Recycled paper will always remain an important part of Izama's identity and our story, but today my work has expanded to include cold porcelain and other thoughtfully selected materials, giving me new ways to create wearable art by hand.
Some pieces celebrate the colors, flowers, traditions, and unmistakable spirit of Puerto Rico. Others are simply inspired by beauty, nature, femininity, texture, and the joy of creating something that didn't exist before.
But regardless of the material, the heart behind every piece remains the same.
Family.
Resilience.
Transformation.
Culture.
Love.
Izama Creations has survived a hurricane, a pandemic, tremendous personal loss, and years of silence.
So this relaunch means much more to me than reopening a business.
It means coming home to a part of myself that I thought I had lost.
Today, when I sit down to create, I carry my children in the name Izama, my Puerto Rican roots in the inspiration behind my work, and my sister's memory in the heart of the story that started it all.
Every piece is handmade, which means no two will ever be exactly alike — just like the stories of the people who wear them.
My hope is that when someone chooses an Izama piece, they don't simply see jewelry.
I hope they see creativity.
I hope they see culture.
I hope they see the beauty of something made slowly and intentionally by human hands.
And perhaps, somewhere within our story, they are reminded of something I have learned through my own:
Even after the strongest storms, the hardest seasons, and the deepest losses, it is still possible to rebuild, create, and find beauty again.
From my family to yours, welcome to the next chapter of Izama Creations. 🇵🇷❤️
